Raising average order value is usually cheaper than buying more traffic. Five cart-level tactics that lift AOV on Shopify without training customers to wait for discounts.
Average order value (AOV) is total revenue divided by number of orders. Lifting it means every visitor you already paid for is worth more, which makes it one of the most efficient growth levers a store has.
1. Show a free-shipping progress bar
Set the threshold slightly above your current AOV and show shoppers how far they are from it. A visible goal turns shipping cost into a reason to add one more item.
2. Offer relevant upsells inside the cart
The cart is where buying intent is highest. Recommend accessories, refills or bundles that match what is already in the cart rather than generic bestsellers.
3. Use tiered rewards instead of flat discounts
"Spend $75, get 10% off; spend $120, get 15% off" rewards larger baskets. A flat code discounts orders that would have converted anyway.
4. Bundle products that are bought together
Check which products appear in the same orders and package them at a small saving. Bundles raise AOV and simplify the buying decision.
5. Put guardrails on every promotion
Cap stacking, exclude low-margin products and set minimum spend. An AOV gain is only worth having if margin survives it.
GrowCart adds an on-brand cart drawer with upsells, free-shipping goals and tiered rewards, with discount guardrails built in.
